While it may be premature yet to speak about the details of WordPress 3.0, it is still a good idea to tinker around and take a quick look at the enhancements of this latest WordPress upgrade. Most of us are all too familiar with those plugins that promise custom type posts in current versions of WordPress that end up with glitches and, at times, never get updated, particularly during upgrades.

Well, this is one of the reasons why we are really excited about WordPress 3.0. The developers of this newest version of WordPress are introducing custom post types, although it is not yet definite whether it will solely be built into the API or presented as GUI in the settings. However, this will not require much skill in coding in order to add them through the functions.php or plugin.

Observers in the blogosphere expect that these custom post types will include photo posts, quotes, audio or podcasts, chats and videos. These custom post types, which you can already post at Tumblr, will now come as standard posts type with WordPress 3.0. This enhancement is a step forward for better organization instead of functionality.

Is there really a need for us to tinker with the custom fields, or add meta boxes in our “Edit Posts” page and spend some time to teach our clients and content managers on how to use them? Would it be better for us to get rid of them and just have a separate item in the main menu?
